how we ended up here
PIERCE (The DOG THAT STARTED IT ALL!)

Pure Bred Black Labrador 2008-2021
We had welcomed our black lab into our family in 2008. He was our first and only dog and lived to be the sweetest “old man dog.” He was easy going and well behaved. The only trouble he ever gave us was due to his extreme love for our hometown. If anyone left the gate open, he would take off for an adventure of his own and we would then become the retrievers. Saying goodbye to him felt like an impossible grief and when we were ready to welcome another dog into our family all we desired was to look into some big beautiful Labrador eyes again! We are a family with children and some special physical needs so this time we needed a smaller dog that was easy to walk. Labs certainly aren’t little. We went about researching how to shrink a lab without some magical machinery and fell in love with the labradoodle world. We chose F1b* mini labradoodles because of their smaller size, athleticism, hypoallergenic/non-shedding coats, their trainability, and OH YES, those perfect Labrador EYES! We found all sorts of fun doodles but had a difficult time finding a labradoodle that was small enough and also considered an F1b*. We learned many lessons along the way and developed a passion to help create healthy mini labradoodles that families could really enjoy right from delivery. We ended up with our 3 loves, Bear, Chickadee, and Mully! Learn more about our dogs below and find out what we learned about each dog. Did we get what we expected? Our puppy search lessons may help you on yours!
*What’s and F1b? Mama Labrador and a Daddy toy poodle make a baby Labradoodle that is half mama’s size. That labradoodle is bred to another toy poodle to add more poodle to the coat and cuts the size down even more.
Bear (sire/dad)

Bear is our 2 year old, 15lb, male, mini labradoodle. He is super playful, loves swimming, kayaking, and snow. Bear loves other animals and is super playful with cats and other dogs. One of Bear’s favorite activities is his weekly grooming! When it is hair cutting time he eagerly follows us as we set up the grooming table and he cheerfully sits for his entire cut. When we pick the next dog to groom, he continues to sit near the table hoping he gets another turn! Bear started what we all call “Love O’ Clock,” where all of a sudden he gets this look of love in his eyes and crawls on his belly up your lap and chest to try nuzzle in your neck. We all say, “oh no! Here comes all the love!”

Chickadee (dame/mom)

Chickadee is our 2 year old, 15lb, female, mini labradoodle. She is super smart and loves to dance and learn new tricks. She is the perfect, gentle companion for the elderly and high needs children that live in and/or visit our home. She loves playing with other animals and can easily outrun, outjump, outsmart, and out maneuver any cat or dog. Her favorite activity is fetching. She can catch almost any throw in the air and she will retrieve a ball back to where ever you are, placing it directly in your hand. This is great when she is playing with someone with a disability who needs the ball placed back in their hand without bending or searching.

Mully (friend/pet)

Mullberry is our 2 year old tiny friend who was sold to us as a “mini labradoodle.” Mully stayed a precious tiny peanut. Mully will jump right up into your arms, ready to snuggle her head on your shoulder. She has very distinct phantom markings and, though she is small, she is fast, playful, and keeps up with all her puppy friends. Mully is every bit of love and joy to our best friends who we decided from the beginning needed her in their home more than we did.
LEARN MORE about Mully’s health and genetics and see why we decided NOT to breed her→
- Poodle 100%/Labrador Retriever 0% (wait! what?!?)
- mully is highly trainable with an excellent temperament
- most of her health checks came back clear but when it comes to breeding, “mostly clear” isn’t the best standard to go by
Mulberry was by far our largest investment and the one we had the highest hopes for. We sadly chose not to breed Mully for the following reasons-
- She is not the breed she was sold to us as. We only wish to breed labradoodle/poodle crosses and this sweet girl is all poodle!
- She turned out smaller than originally advertised. Her breeders have since switched the term they use from mini to micro.
- She carries one copy of the gene for progressive retinol atrophy. she will not be affected by this but her puppies could be born carriers and if ever bred to another carrier could lead to significant vision loss and eventually blindness for their offspring.
- Periodic belly and stooling issues requiring special diet
- *She Carries For CDDY Which Most Toy Poodles Carry. This Did Not Play Into Our Decision To Not Breed Her.
